You ask me: what is life? That’s just like asking: what is a carrot? A carrot is a carrot, and that’s all we know. Three Sisters is an elegant play, Chekhov put life on stage without judging. There is a kind of poetry in Chekhov’s play. So the goal of the set design is to keep the poetry but also support the realistic acting.
The whole set from thrust to upstage is a transition from real life to emotional space. Three walls are falling down, the upstage wall is transparent. Also upstage wall will fly away after Act3 during the photo trees and leaves coming for Act4. Those photo trees represent all the past, good memories that the three sisters have left here and can’t bring with them to move on.
